Although just before that there happen to be cases of betrothal gifts which entail diamond jewelry such as tiaras, brooches, and necklaces - which is the first case of a diamond ring being given upon an engagement.

Needless to say - the rest is history.

Today, value of loose diamonds in romance and engagement will be the predominant symbolism all over the world. It has a special meaning, and has potent emotional significance, but it doesn't mean that it couldn't one day symbolize something quite different once again.
